Spanish is somewhat easier than French for an English-speaking beginner to pronounce. It has only one silent letter and only a few sounds that do not occur in English. Grammatically the two are about equal, with Spanish perhaps a bit more difficult, owing to the fact that its verbs take personal endings instead of personal pronouns, and it uses the subjunctive mood more.
On the other hand, French is far more interesting and more closely related to English. Also, there is undoubtedly a great deal of very important Spanish literature, but it has nothing like the depth and breadth of French literature. For elegance, grace and style, nothing beats French, which has been the language of European civilization for centuries.
